Hargeisa โ The Somaliland Ministry of Health Development has begun implementing the Electronic Immunization Registry (EIR), a digital system designed to improve the registration and monitoring of childhood vaccinations.
As part of the rollout, tablets and system accounts have been distributed to 12 health facilities seven public and five private that provide immunization services for children. Staff at these facilities had previously received training on how to operate and manage the system.
The launch event was officially inaugurated by the Director General of the Ministry of Health Development, Dr. Ahmed Mahmoud Jama.
The ceremony was also attended by the Director of the Child Health and Immunization Department, the National Data Manager, the Maroodi-Jeex Regional Health Coordinator, and representatives from Save the Children, as well as officials from the 12 participating health facilities.
The Electronic Immunization Registry replaces the traditional paper-based vaccination records with a digital system, making it easier to track childrenโs vaccination schedules.
The platform also includes an SMS reminder service that notifies parents of upcoming vaccination dates for their children.
In addition, the system is integrated with DHIS2 to improve the quality of health data and strengthen evidence-based decision-making within the Ministry of Health.
The main objectives of implementing the EIR system include ensuring accurate digital recording of childhood vaccination data, facilitating easier monitoring of vaccination schedules, sending SMS reminders to parents to ensure children receive vaccines on time, improving the quality of national health data, and enhancing data-driven decision-making within the health sector.
The Director General encouraged the health workers who received the training to make effective use of the knowledge they gained, share it with their colleagues, and ensure the system is efficiently implemented in the health facilities where they work.
