COMMUNIQUÉ:Somaliland Maritime Security Coordination Meeting.

Hargeisa- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland convened the Quarterly Meeting of the Maritime Security CoordinationMechanism on 12 April 2026 in Hargeisa, bringing together key governmentinstitutions responsible for maritime security.

Discussions focused on the evolving maritime security environment, assessing emerging risks and strengthening national coordination in response to regional and global developments affecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

With over 850 kilometres of coastline along a critical global shipping corridor,Somaliland occupies a strategically significant position.

Participants underscoredSomaliland’s sustained efforts to maintain maritime stability, including combatingterrorism, transnational crime, and smuggling networks.

The meeting highlighted the increasing complexity of maritime security, driven byemerging geopolitical developments impacting key global trade routes.

Thesedynamics were recognised as directly affecting regional security and global tradeflows, reinforcing the need for enhanced coordination.

Somaliland’s constructive engagement with regional and international partners was reaffirmed, particularly in supporting the safety and security of vital sea lanes.

The Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding freedom of navigation andstrengthening cooperation based on mutual respect, international law, and shared security interests.

Participants agreed to strengthen the Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) frameworkthrough improved inter-agency collaboration, enhanced information-sharingmechanisms, and coordinated responses to emerging threats.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing maritime security, promoting regional stability, and contributing to joint efforts to protect international waters.END
