HARGEISAโ The Somaliland House of Representatives has appointed Amina Ali Farid as Chair of the Social Affairs Committee, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the firstโand onlyโfemale member of parliament to lead the influential body.
The official handover ceremony was presided over by First Deputy Speaker Saeed Mire Farah (Gire), during which outgoing Acting Chair Ahmed Abdi Walhada formally transferred responsibilities to the new chair.
The Social Affairs Committee is currently reviewing several critical draft laws, including legislation on healthcare, higher education, social protection, and media reform.
The committee is also engaged in advancing efforts to combat female genital mutilation (FGM), a key social policy priority.
Aminaโs appointment is seen as a significant step in strengthening inclusive leadership within Somalilandโs legislative institutions, as the committee continues its work on reforms impacting core social sectors.
